First update of 2010
June 5th, 2010

It has been a long while since I have updated this site. I have done a lot of paddling and have added several new lakes to my list. My most interesting story over the past many months started last fall when a friend asked if I would be interested in doing some work on her fathers cedar canvas canoe. Before agreeing I visited with Lee Keating & Darryl Swaine to get their advice. They assured me that they would help me along with the restoration. When I first got the canoe in my shop I found that it had a serial number stamped in the keel. Lee & Darryl suggested that I look for it and if I found one it is most likely a Old Town and I could email the company and get the original build record for the canoe. I was amazed to find that the canoe was built in July/Aug 1914. Over the next few months I spent many hours replacing 9 ribs, planking in two spots, rebuilding the points on both ends and putting on a new canvas. When all was said & done the canoe looked great. I took it out for its first paddle on the Roseway River near home. It was a great experience. It moves gracefully through the water, I could have stayed out for days I did not want to return it to the owner. I hope to own one of my own some day.
There will me more updates over the next few days.
