Goose Lake
Close Encounter of the Deer Kind
September 25,2010
I this day I headed to to paddle Goose lake, while there I decided to explore up Goose Creek. It meanders northward out of the lake for several kilometers. When I came around the first bend in the creek I spotted a Great Blue Heron taking off and heading up stream. Over the years I have only got glimpses of these great birds and this is the first while canoeing, it should go without saying that I have never photographed them either, maybe today would be the day. I continued paddling along trying not to make much noise in hopes of seeing the Heron. After about a hour or so I got another glimpse of it but again to far away to get a good picture.
I continued on and after some time I was about 4km upstream when I last sighted the heron. The water was getting scarce and I knew that I had gone just about as far as I could and was just about ready to head back to the car. I was in a wooded area with lots of bushes when I heard something big a short ways off to my left and it was coming towards me. I looked but could not see what is was when all of a sudden a four point buck jumped across the creek no more them ten feet in front of me and kept going. I only saw it for a second or two, the whole experience last about twenty or thirty seconds but I will never forget it.
