Trip to Ryers Lake
August 12, 09
14km
The trip to Ryers starts at the bottom of Lake Deception. This is a good spot to access the Roseway system. The trip downstream from here is one of the best in the county. On this day I was heading across the lake to an area that I have not explored before. I was a bit surprised to see how many cottages line the shore. I paddled across to the far shore and headed north, it was a beautiful day to be out. I came to the spot where the two lakes were the closest and looked at the possible carry (about 200m). It looked much the same as the carry to Cranberry Lake that I had done a few days earlier. Maps show a stream that flows to Ryers about 1.4km north of here; I decided to paddle up the shore to see what the stream looked like. Once there though I found a small trickle of water and overgrown bushes and down trees. If I am going to make it to Ryers the carry looks like the only option. So I headed back down the lake. Once there I grabbed my gear and headed out. It was a difficult push through woods, about half way across I found a road that I thought would make it much easier but it was a big tease because it runs between the lakes and not to them. I did find an easier path from the road to lake. Once there I dropped my gear and went back for my canoe. Again the trip from Deception to the road was difficult but eventually I made it to Ryers. Like many lake this one was covered with lily pads but a beautiful place to paddle. I spent about 1 hour on the lake. While paddling down to where the carry is I broke my double bladed. I had made this paddle a few years ago out of some scrap wood I had in my shop just to see if I would like it. While looking for info about double bladed paddles I found that there is some controversy over the use of these paddles in a canoe. I prefer a single bladed but when on big water in windy situation I prefer the double. Anyway I do of course have a second paddle with me and I continued on and made my way back to the car and headed home.
At the end of the day I completed my route and am able to take another lake off my list.
